Pike gone wild! The story of a great day of pike fishing.

IMG_0409

Hi fellow anglers, fishing enthusiasts and AMFisHers!  This blog post is titled Pike gone wild and it’s a good title for my most recent day of fishing this past weekend.

I was out at a local conservation lake targeting largemouth bass and was planning on doing some pike fishing as well, but the bass were nowhere to be found. The water was very calm all day, with very little wind so I knew the fishing might be tough but it was actually the opposite fish were feeding all day long.

Sometimes the conditions appear one way but the fish will always tell us what is going on. With the water looking like a large piece of glass, motionless and all the first sign of what fishing would be like was all the activity going on in nature. Birds were flying around chirping, frogs were croaking, bug were flying around, ducks were feeding on the water as were Canadian goose, a lot of water activity that confirmed the fish would be feeding.

I started to fish various areas I usually catch bass in and even those tight to shorelines thick weed areas and I got a massive first strike by a dock. I thought it was a bass at first as it behaved like a bass then I saw it was a nice size pike that smashed my LIVETARGET top water hollow body sunfish bait. As I continued to fish the tall weed shoreline I was getting top water strike after top water strike on my sunfish bait, crazy hard strikes as well!

The biggest pike of the day actually smashed the bait felt it was hooked and jumped out of the water backwards back into the 6 foot tall weeds, then wrapped me around several bundles trying to get free.  The baits of the day were the LIVETARGET hollow body sunfish which is a top water bait, the Freedom Tackle Corp. Hydra shad which is a hair jig style bait that I tipped with a white curly tail grub and a Sebile black and chartreuse lipless cranbait, all baits caught several fish for me.

It was one of those fishing days where you just knew you could not do anything wrong, all the baits I had planned on using were catching fish even though it was not the fish species I was targeting, the baits were all bang on to what the fish were feeding on.  During this 8 plus hour day of fishing I ended up catching only pike and about 20 of them in total, ranging from little hammers about 14 inches long right up to a few over 20 plus inches, so it made for one of those awesome fishing days!

Those first few minutes on the water can really tell you a lot about what is going on that day, so be sure to pay attention to what nature is telling you, it can really be a huge game changer when it comes to catching or not catching fish.  I started out making 10 casts with each bait, if nothing was getting attention I would switch between the three baits I had decided to use that day. The best performing bait by far on this day was the hydra shad hair jig style bait, in a white with red pattern. The bait itself was about 6 inches in overall length and as always I added a three each white curly tail grub as a trailer for added action and scent, which really sealed the deal!

This was a new bait I was trying this season and it worked so well for me that when I cast it out the first time I had a fish on in seconds. Now granted the fish were feeding but the bait looked good enough to them right from the start that they were making it a meal! When you have a high level of confidence thinking a bait will work for you, it can definitely turn an average fishing day into an awesome fishing day!

Trying new baits each season and sometimes even trying those new baits you bought and have yet to try out is always a good thing, as you learn how to use that new bait and also learn if you have confidence using it. I could not have asked for a better fishing day, the fish were all over the place and hitting everything I was using, let’s call this day an anglers dream day of fishing!

I ended up capturing a lot of great video clips and some really cool fish catch pictures, even  though it was a drizzling rain on and off day I did everything I could to make sure I took great fishing pictures by utilizing the hazy bright sky to my advantage. All in all is was a great outing and some much needed time spent fishing!

Tight lines everyone!

This weeks AMFisH fishing vlog – Items to consider when buying a fishing kayak – fishing.

Hi AMFisHers! This AMFisH(LEARN more: www.amfish.ca) fishing vlog is about key items to consider when getting a kayak for fishing:

The #1 thing to consider should actually be where you live, WHY well I will use myself as an example, I have a sit in kayak because I live in a climate that does get much cooler in the fall and in order for me to fish as long as I want during the season I need to be up out of the water to stay dry.

A sit on top kayak would only work for me a few months out of our fishing season, as you are sitting on top with water access all around you, so staying dry and warmer would definitely be impacted in this style kayak.

This is definitely the key decision maker for getting into kayak fishing, as it can make or break the amount of time you spend on the water. Other key items are storage as it is a much smaller area to fish in outside of a boat. Versatility meaning how does the kayak perform while fishing, is it easy to access all the compartments for your needs, storage, transporting it to the lake, accessories for fishing, all key items to consider when looking at kayaks for fishing.

In the end make sure the kayak you purchase is the right kayak for your fishing needs, that way you will be happy for a long time!

This weeks AMFisH fishing vlog, spring & early season fishing tips – fishing

Hi AMFisHers!   This weeks AMFisH fishing vlog is about spring & early season fishing tips:

Are you not catching enough fish in the early months?   Well there are a few things to keep in mind in the earlier fishing season and bait size is at the top of the list!   Once we come out of the winter months and cooler temps we get excited about fishing, which is great BUT we also need to focus and analyze the baitfish, specifically their size.

Spring is all about rejuvenation and growth, so the key is to realize that baitfish are their smallest in the early months.  From here what you need to do to produce more fish is make sure to match your bait size to the bait in the water.  This means observing the baitfish at the start of the season, looking at how they move, estimating their size this means length and width and from here you can look at the baits you have and match accordingly.

By doing this you can drastically increase your fish catch ratio by as much as 50% or more!  Fish have feeding habits that are driven by various tools they use, smell, touch with their mouths, linear line senses and their eyes, so we need to trick them into having a reason to go after our bait.   If they are used to gorging on a specific food source, lets say minnows of a 2 1/2 inch size in the early months, then we as AMFisHers need to throw a similar size bait at the fish.

If our bait is close in size, moves like the bait in the water and the overall bait profile is pretty close, our bait then automatically blends in with the real bait making it a good choice for the fish.   As the season progresses you will continue to do the same thing by matching bait size to what you see in the water, BUT this also applies to bait you see outside the water.  Do this same examination of frogs, small birds, rats, mice, snakes, turtles, any food source we know fish go after and match those sizes to what you see.

If you are mainly seeing smaller brown frogs, then you pull out your smaller 2 inch version of a brown frog and use that.  I can’t tell you how well doing this works, as it is the best way for us to confuse our bait in with what the fish are seeing all the time, no greater way to catch more fish!

This weeks AMFisH fishing vlog – having a plan of attack for your outings – fishing.

Hi AMFisHers!  This weeks AMFisH(LEARN more: http://www.amfish.ca) fishing vlog is about having a plan of attack for your fishing outings:

I can stress how important this is and how much better your fishing outings will be with a strategy in place for your outings.  As we all see the amount of work professional bass fisherman out in preparing for fishing tournaments, with all those hours upon hours of putting together a strategy for each tournament day.  Well we as AMFisHers need to put in some time as well, maybe not to the pros extent BUT it is critical to have a strategy for your outings as it can be a big contributing factor to you catching fish.

Now where to start?  A good place is making sure your tackle and gear is ready for the outing, this means having the baits you want to use for the day organized in one place, rods you want to use all rigged up with your first batch of starting baits for that outing/lake, spots on the lake picked out and a approach for fishing those spots once you get there, simple little stuff like this.

Everything from time of arrival to the lake, estimated time you will start fishing your first spot, examining the weather upon arrival at the lake, all key points that should not be overlooked, WHY well although some may think these are all simple little things that can be done once you get to the lake, we all know how fast we forget about things when the excitement of fishing kicks in, so being ready and sticking to a plan is key.

Let’s say the weather is supposed to be bright and sunny all day with high heat and once you get to the lake you are greeted with severe overcast sky’s with a slight breeze, your strategy for that hot bright day will need to be tweaked in order to catch fish.  Put those bright colored baits on hold for a while and pull out those darker profile baits that the fish will be able to zone in on a lot easier with the overcast sky’s.  Having a strategy in place is great BUT make sure you can tweak it at a moments notice, because Mother Nature can change quickly some days and we as AMFisHers have to change along with her.

If you get into the practice of strategizing a couple of days before your fishing outing, it will go a long way when it comes to how versatile you can actually become on the water.   The best part comes when you have a plan of attack for outings that is fully customizable when it comes to tweaking it on a last minute basis, example a GO TO BOX of baits that can be used under several conditions, this way you are not wasting valuable time trying to find baits while on the lake.

We all know the more time your fishing rod spends out of the water the less fish we will actually catch, so start working on a basic starter strategy and before you know it you will be tweaking it very quickly and catching more fish!

This week’s AMFisH fishing vlog – how to position your boat in the wind.

Hi fellow fishing people!   Take a look at the AMFisH fishing vlog that’s up it’s about how to position your boat in the wind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GNR_Mkk4FE&feature=player_embedded

We have all fished on those crazy windy day’s and it can be difficult to find a way to fish when the wind is doing whatever it want’s with the boat.   In this vlog I discuss some things that you can do to actually use the wind to your advantage.

If you position yourself right in the middle of the wind where it kind of feels like it is the strongest, you can use it to drift you along shorelines so you can actually fish without battling the wind.

It’s relatively easy to find this spot in the wind as you drive your boat horizontally along the blowing wind until you feel that strong spot that is where you will want to stop and try to maintain that center position.

This will allow you to be pushed along by the wind making casting much easier and you can cast further and without any reel issues because the wind will be behind you.   You will need to reel in quite quickly in a strong wind or you will soon drift over your bait, but this is a great way to have some intense fish strikes as those windy day’s will blow schools of baitfish around the lake.

You can also position yourself to go into the wind, this would be with the help of your motor or trolling motor being on.  What this type of fishing allows you to do is fish the wind in a different style, slower retrieve with the bait but a little more battle heading into the wind.

All in all why let the wind ruin a day of fishing when you can just work with it to produce fish!
