This weeks AMFisH fishing vlog – Items to consider when buying a fishing kayak – fishing.

Hi AMFisHers! This AMFisH(LEARN more: www.amfish.ca) fishing vlog is about key items to consider when getting a kayak for fishing:

The #1 thing to consider should actually be where you live, WHY well I will use myself as an example, I have a sit in kayak because I live in a climate that does get much cooler in the fall and in order for me to fish as long as I want during the season I need to be up out of the water to stay dry.

A sit on top kayak would only work for me a few months out of our fishing season, as you are sitting on top with water access all around you, so staying dry and warmer would definitely be impacted in this style kayak.

This is definitely the key decision maker for getting into kayak fishing, as it can make or break the amount of time you spend on the water. Other key items are storage as it is a much smaller area to fish in outside of a boat. Versatility meaning how does the kayak perform while fishing, is it easy to access all the compartments for your needs, storage, transporting it to the lake, accessories for fishing, all key items to consider when looking at kayaks for fishing.

In the end make sure the kayak you purchase is the right kayak for your fishing needs, that way you will be happy for a long time!

This weeks AMFisH fishing vlog, spring & early season fishing tips – fishing

Hi AMFisHers!   This weeks AMFisH fishing vlog is about spring & early season fishing tips:

Are you not catching enough fish in the early months?   Well there are a few things to keep in mind in the earlier fishing season and bait size is at the top of the list!   Once we come out of the winter months and cooler temps we get excited about fishing, which is great BUT we also need to focus and analyze the baitfish, specifically their size.

Spring is all about rejuvenation and growth, so the key is to realize that baitfish are their smallest in the early months.  From here what you need to do to produce more fish is make sure to match your bait size to the bait in the water.  This means observing the baitfish at the start of the season, looking at how they move, estimating their size this means length and width and from here you can look at the baits you have and match accordingly.

By doing this you can drastically increase your fish catch ratio by as much as 50% or more!  Fish have feeding habits that are driven by various tools they use, smell, touch with their mouths, linear line senses and their eyes, so we need to trick them into having a reason to go after our bait.   If they are used to gorging on a specific food source, lets say minnows of a 2 1/2 inch size in the early months, then we as AMFisHers need to throw a similar size bait at the fish.

If our bait is close in size, moves like the bait in the water and the overall bait profile is pretty close, our bait then automatically blends in with the real bait making it a good choice for the fish.   As the season progresses you will continue to do the same thing by matching bait size to what you see in the water, BUT this also applies to bait you see outside the water.  Do this same examination of frogs, small birds, rats, mice, snakes, turtles, any food source we know fish go after and match those sizes to what you see.

If you are mainly seeing smaller brown frogs, then you pull out your smaller 2 inch version of a brown frog and use that.  I can’t tell you how well doing this works, as it is the best way for us to confuse our bait in with what the fish are seeing all the time, no greater way to catch more fish!

This weeks AMFisH fishing vlog – where to find fish on really hot days – fishing.

Hi fellows AMFisHers!   This weeks AMFisH(LEARN more here: http://www.amfish.ca) fishing vlog is about how to locate and find more fish on really hot days:

Keeping an eye out for groups of birds or prey is one quick way to locate where baitfish are and where the bait are the fish will not be too far off!   On these really hot days we need to take water temperature into high consideration, WHY well if you have ever put your hands in a lake or went swimming in a lake you will know about that cold pocket you usually feel with your toes while treading water.

When the days are hot with that beaming sun you need to understand that fish will not always be out sunning themselves in that very warm water, which is typically the first 2 to 3ft of the water column closest to the surface.  WHY, well it’s simple the water is far too hot for the fish to be hanging around in, they will move towards the cooler water column located below, out of the direct sunlight where they can be sitting at a much more comfortable temperature.

You may find some fish cruising the shallows for some sun but they will not be there for long periods of time, so casting the shoreline is still a good option BUT the key is to keep an eye out for activity taking place.  If you do not see fish, baitfish and other bait in the shallows and the water is very still with a calmness about it, the best thing to do is to immediately try deeper water. Back out to double the depth you were just fishing in, example if you were casting into 3ft of water head for 6ft deep water and try fishing that area, then double that depth a second time until you start getting some bites.

Trying areas filled with shade is also a great way to find some fish, thick tall reed filled areas with shade pockets, boat houses, docks, a every shade filled bay, all these spots are good as fish will hold in shade filled areas as well, because that water there will also be much cooler than the sunny spots.

Just like we would be uncomfortable in very warm water for too long of a time, fish are actually that much more uncomfortable in the warm water, so they do move in many cases right away from it into the cooler stuff.

This weeks AMFisH fishing vlog – what to do when a fish follows your bait back to the boat.

Hi AMFisHers!   Take a look at this great video I have up at AMFisH.ca this week, it’s about what to do when you have a fish follow your bait to the boat and it does not bite:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=rm_nmUah7x4

That almost helpless feeling we get when a big fish follows our bait right up to the side of the boat, take a good look then swims away….ugh what a horrible feeling.

This will happen so it’s better to be prepared instead of not knowing what to do, so in this video I talk about some keys things that can increase the chances of that fish striking.

First if the fish is following with speed you can try to pause the bait for a quick second, this will almost cause the fish to crash into the bait because it was overcommitted.  If the fish is slowly following it speed up your bait as fast as possible, this will keep it’s interest in the bait and potentially chase it down.

If the fish follows with intensity you can take your bait right into a figure eight by the side of the boat, this is where you speed your bait up and using your rod to draw out a figure eight in the water.   This will take lots of practice but when you have it down it can make a fish chase the bait down and still stay interested.

The figure eight basically make your bait look frantic, like it is scurrying around trying to escape and it usually results in the fish striking.   Lastly if the fish follows and turn away try throwing out a slower moving bait, example you just reeled in your spinnerbait and the fish turned away, well cast out that slow sinking crankbait that suspends in place on the pause, this is another way to trigger a strike.

You can some of the time trigger that strike so be prepared and pull out all the stops to make it happen!

This weeks AMFisH fishing vlog – observe while fishing!

Hi AMFisHers!  This weeks AMFisH fishing vlog is about observing while fishing:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=s7bSnuBqg3s

Observing while fishing has been something I have been doing since I was a little kid, not sure what it was that made me start but I was always looking along the shoreline for frogs and mice scurrying around, minnows jumping on the surface of the water, long reeds growing out of the water that were all of a sudden moving on a still day, that sort of stuff.

I quickly saw that the more I did this the more I was catching fish, WHY well when you notice stuff like this and make a cast near these areas you have a really good chance at catching a fish there.

Great example of this is when I saw a frog jump into the lake and start gliding across the surface, I cast my frog bait on to shore and started working it at the same speed, a fish missed attacking the real frog mine was close behind and “BANG” the fish attacked!   I had caught a nice size largemouth bass just by working my frog behind the real frog.

Keep your eyes working along the areas you fish, once you start noticing stuff like fish breaching out of the water, major schools of baitfish, these are the things you want to catch happening and once again include your bait around these areas like casting a few feet away from the fish breach of directly into the school of baitfish.

It will not take long for you to see that this is a great way to find and catch more fish!

Hope you found this vlog helpful.
